Explanation for my scores
TL;DR –
I only recommend patronizing ~4.5 s or higher in any category
Food
5 is worth going out of the way to get (will try to write more details for items I give a 5/5) FISH CHEEKS
4 is worth getting but is situationally based (mood / price / convenience) FLATBUSH THAI CORP
3 is slightly above average – SLOW LORIS (Happy Hour only)
2 is slightly below average – LIPS coffee on NOSTRAND
1 is dangerous – You should go to the hospital or call the police on this place – not going to out any places here…
Price
5/5 is Super good unbelievable value
(Ex. Wah Fung No.1 or L’Industrie Pizzeria…Let me explain)
4/5 is Above average value
(Ex. Chinese TAKEOUT Restaurants on Nostrand ave in Brookyln – where they pile food into a take out container or Cafeteria at Downstate University)
3/5 is average value
(Ex. Chicken over Rice at Gourmet Deli on Nostrand or Bagel and Cream cheese from PLG Cafe)
2/5 is same price as if you’d make it at home
(Ex. Swiss Slice on Nostrand or Vegan food at Aunt et Uncles on Nostrand)
1/5 is bad like baked potatoes where you put the toppings on yourself at the farmers market but it still cost like +10$ for it FYM i’m paying that much when you just microwaved a potato
(Ex. A BEC from Leon’s Bagels – I think it was like 16$ for a BEC or something it was my first one and I thought I was going to get my mind blown . . . After the first bite I actually cried a single tear and instantly got a stomachache. (Horrible Experience)
Experience
Honestly it’s the same as the Food review – Ill edit this later maybe I’m not really feeling it
5/5 ex. Lychee is such a pretty pastry shop with cute little museum. It is like a perfect date spot with a well thought out, fun and innovative menu. Even if the food wasn’t as wonderful as the shop looks to just to go here to soak in that ambiance is well worth the visit alone.
Long Explanation for my scores
Distribution of the scores are going to skew to like generally on the HIGHER end because 1. I go to places that people say are good generally and I will rate places I like 2. I rate like the individual food items and not the restaurant as a whole. (Not yet at least). 3. My ratings are also just more LAX for the 3.5 and the 4.3 range but more STRICT for the 4.5-5. I also think most places are better than the average fast food place so they automatically will go to 3 stars. WHILE my scores are lax my feelings are generally ONLY INTENTIONALLY GO TO EAT at places that have a 4.3 or higher.
So with that being said I’d say I do have a tendency to prefer to go to places that cost more and have better food and just eat out less than to eat out more but it cost less for worse food. I have a strong ASIAN food bias and I do not like Mediterranean food really. I also have a weird thing about spicy food…
FOOD RATING
This is my opinion (obviously this is my website) but I think more places should get a higher rating than what they are getting and that’s only if you get the items that they are known for making good.
SO this is obvious but I think that a score for food should first of all not be a metric used to dictate how good the food actually is but more so that person’s opinion on the food.
Sure we can argue about whether a score is justifiable and if there were maybe some extenuating circumstances that have made the scores more volatile than they needed to be. Like me I don’t like my wings wet so even if the wing TASTES better but it’s hella WET imma rate it lower than a moderately worse tasting wing that is a dry rub. I will probably put an addendum in the description if I feel that it is necessary or would diffuse any sort of confusion.
PRICING RATING
I am human and therefore I am fallible. I am not the most reliable with my reviews when it comes to like PRICING because when I do pricing there is like so much nuance to it that it does FEEL like I cannot get an accurate rating. Especially if you were just to go off price. HOWEVER for my pricing I usually will go off of for what the dish / ambiance is what do I think I feel like the PRCINING should be versus what it is. If I feel like I got a fair deal for my food than I will give it a 3/5 ish with some pitiful explanation. There are many places where if the food is at least a 4/5 than I will p much always rate it 3/5 unless the pricing is EGREGIOUS.
For example hand rolls from WABI NORI – pricey but the fish they use is pretty good and the hand rolls have like some complexity to it and the restaurant itself is sort of pretty inside with some good service. So while it was pricey the overall experience made it not seem like I wasted my money.
With that being said I am not going to say if the restaurant looks nice than the food has to be expensive. THE majority of the pricing score is going to be based on
QUALITY / QUANTITY
COMPLEXITY
NOVELTY / SCARCITY
Minor Considerations are things that don’t matter that much unless it is EXCEPTIONAL.
SERVICE
AMBIANCE
RANDOM THINGS
MOOD – I will most likely always say if I was in an exceptional bad or good mood and how maybe it could muddy or unmuddy an experience
So since I have said all that why L’industrie would get a 5/5 is because first of all I ain’t making no Dang pizza in my house. 2nd it’s like 6 bucks for a decent sized slice that fills you up (I can not eat cheese like some of you so maybe there is something there to that) 3. The pizzas are p complex and not just like things you’d already have in the kitchen to scrounge up even if you were going to make a pizza. And if that’s you than good for you ok you get a thumbs up from me any day of the week you make something like that.
EXPERIENCE RATING
This rating is kind of like not super necessary and it can generally just be conflated with pricing because of the mentioned metrics but I decided to just create this so I can have a section specifically to cater to like the reason why I came to a place. Like if it is a coffee place that I like to study at because while the FOOD SUCKS and the PRICING SUCKS but they let me stay there all day with WiFi and it’s easy to get to with a lot of seats I will give it a high experience rating. Generally with this I will say why something gets a lower or higher rating so I won’t add a list of values here.
